Siri pronunciation prompts Siri to say names the right way

February 14, 2022 by Hemant Saxena

Names that are hard to spell or pronounce correctly always end up as nicknames in our phonebooks. Thankfully, Siri pronunciation offers the best way to correct this kind of behavior. It allows the digital voice assistant to get the hang of some names. So, if you rely heavily on Siri to pronounce the names of your Italian or French contacts correctly, use this guide.

How to use Siri Pronunciation to force Siri to say the names right way

Although Siri’s tone and natural language capabilities have improved significantly, it can still mispronounce some names. Through Siri Pronunciation in iOS 15 or later, you can easily prompt Siri to pronounce a name correctly. It isn’t just common courtesy but the most satisfactory way to acknowledge someone and respect him/her.

  1. Open the Contacts list on your iPhone.
  2. Select a contact.
  3. Tap the Edit link.
  4. Scroll down to add field link. Click to open it.
  5. Tap the Phonetic first name/phonetic middle name or phonetic last name.
  6. Check if Siri pronounces the name correctly.

Let’s cover the above steps in a bit more detail!

How to correct Siri pronunciation?

With so many ways to pronounce names in different accents, it can be a task of sorts for Siri to get them right by default. So, if you find it butchering a name, make these changes to correct it.

Open the Contacts app on your iPhone and select a name Siri is having a problem with. Click the Edit link located in the upper-right corner of the Contact’s detail screen.

When directed to a new screen, scroll down to locate the add field option. Click to open it.

In the list that appears, tap the Phonetic first name/phonetic middle name or phonetic last name to write a name phonetically so Siri will say it correctly. For example, in my case, I added a Phonetic first name as Siri finds it hard to pronounce.

When done, invoke Siri to say the name. It should pronounce the name correctly this time.

What does Siri stand for?

Siri is a digital voice assistant and a shorthand for Speech Interpretation and Recognition Interface. It can make calls for you or send texts without you having to pick up your device. You can also use Siri Shortcuts to have faster access to apps.

That’s all there is to it. Hope it makes sense!
