Twitter Unmentioning function lets you leave a conversation instantly

July 17, 2022 by Hemant Saxena

Not all conversations on Twitter yield meaningful outcomes. Some can even become toxic. The best option, in that case, would be to leave the conversation without dragging it further. Twitter Unmentioning feature simplifies this process. It lets you remove yourself from a conversation that includes your Twitter handle. Let’s find out how to use it!

How to use Twitter Unmentioning function to quit a conversation

Twitter already supports several features to keep mentions civil, including an anti-harassment Safety Mode. The new addition gives you more control over your micro-blogging experience. Twitter Unmentioning untags your username to stop notifications for the thread and also prevents anyone in the thread from tagging you again.

  1. Open your Twitter app.
  2. Tap the Notifications icon.
  3. Select the conversation.
  4. Tap Menu.
  5. Choose the Leave this conversation option.
  6. Confirm your action to quit the conversation.

The option to leave a conversation on Twitter was first rolled out in a testing phase somewhere in April. Now it has been rolled out publicly to everyone on all devices.

What happens when you leave a conversation on Twitter?

Confirming to leave a conversation on Twitter does 3 things.

  • Untag your username – Your username stays but it will be untagged from the original Tweet and replies.
  • Stop future mentions – People won’t be in a position to mention you again in the conversation you’ve chosen not to be a part of.
  • Stop notifications – You won’t receive further notifications but can still see and read the conversation.

Note – If you can’t see the Leave this conversation option for a tweet that mentions your name or it appears greyed out, try updating the app to the latest version, and then, try again!

That’s all you need to know about how to use the new Twitter Unmentioning feature.
