Simple way to change keyboard language on Mac

If your daily writing work involves just inserting a few symbols or foreign characters then, you need not change the keyboard language. But, if you want to type in a different language on MacBook without a keyboard designed for that language, you’ll certainly need to figure out how to change keyboard language, beforehand. Here’s a guide you might find useful.

How to change keyboard language on Mac?

Like other operating systems, Apple macOS too supports multiple languages and their accepted input sources. So, swapping between languages or the method to change keyboard language on Mac may not appear as a difficult task. However, it’s something that is not immediately obvious to many users. Refer this guide, if you are one of those individuals who regularly swap between languages on your keyboard layout.

  1. Go to Apple menu.
  2. Choose System Preferences.
  3. Select Keyboard icon.
  4. Switch to the Input Sources tab.
  5. Hit the ‘+’ icon to add a language.
  6. Hit the Add button.
  7. Switch input sources as needed by using the input menu from the Menu bar.

Please note, the option to show the Input menu in the menu bar is selected by default. You can use the Caps Lock key to switch to and fro from the last used Latin input source. Press and Hold to enable typing in all uppercase.

How to switch language on MacBook?

Assuming, you are running the latest version of the macOS version – Big Sur, go to the Apple menu, located in the upper-left corner of your Desktop screen.

Next, select System Preferences to open the System preferences window.

Choose the Keyboard icon as show in the image above.

When directed to a new screen, switch to the Input Sources tab and hit the Add button (visible as a + sign) to dd the language.

Once you have the input sources added, the language will be automatically added to the list of preferred languages in Language & Region preferences. You can change the keyboard language o Mac anytime by accessing the Input menu from the Menu bar as shown above.

Lastly, when you choose an input source that doesn’t match your keyboard, the keys you see and press may appear different from the characters displayed when you press the keys on the physical keyboard.

To find which keys to be used or pressed, switch to the Mac Keyboard Viewer via Input Sources menu.

Change keyboard language shortcut mac

You can use the Option-Control-Space bar keys combination together to select the next input source in the Input menu or Control-Space bar to select the previous input source. Alternatively, if you would like to set an option in Keyboard preferences to change input sources by using the Fn key, press the key to display a list of your input sources, then continue pressing the key until the input source you want to switch to is selected.
