How to use Announce messages with Siri to read messages through AirPods Pro

November 20, 2020 by Hemant Saxena

Siri makes it easier to attend to any incoming calls via AirPods or AirPods Pro. You just need to press the Force Sensor to answer with AirPods Pro or double-tap the AirPods (1st or 2nd generation). Similarly, you can use Announce messages with Siri feature to make the digital voice assistant read the message for you through AirPods Pro. If you are not aware of how to use this feature, we’ll help you get started!

How to use Announce messages with Siri to read your incoming messages?

If you have your AirPods Pro or compatible Beats headphones plugged in, Siri can read your incoming messages. Then you can reply instantly, hands-free. Here’s how you can enable this capability by using Announce messages with Siri feature.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Scroll down to the Announce Notifications heading.
  4. Enable the feature.
  5. Do the same for Messages.
  6. Enable Reply Without Confirmation, if required.

Siri read text messages automatically alongside mentioning the sender’s name. If the message received is long, it will simply announce the sender’s name and inform you that a message has been received. See the detailed description below for how to get Siri to read text messages.

How to get Siri to announce messages on AirPods?

On your iPhone, go to the Settings.

Scroll down to the Notifications heading.

When directed to a new screen, move to the Siri section. Under it, tap the Announce Notifications entry.

Slide the toggle to On position.

Also, tap Messages and make sure that Announce New Messages is turned on there too.

Now, when a new message is delivered, wait for Siri to read the message. Siri then listens for your reply.

If you want to reply instantly, tell Siri you’d like to reply, then speak your message. Say something like “Reply ‘I’m on my way’.

As soon as you stop talking, Siri reads your reply back to you and asks if you want to send it.

You can skip the above step and make Siri send your reply immediately, without reading it. For this, go to Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications and toggle the switch next to Reply Without Confirmation to the On position.

Check if you have your AirPods Pro, AirPods (2nd generation) or Beats headphones paired to your iOS device. Also, make sure you’re using a compatible device.

That’s all there is to it!
