How to disable Headphone Safety feature for your Apple Watch?

March 4, 2021 by Hemant Saxena

Companies should not dictate the terms of use of their items. It should be left at the sole discretion of buyers. Unfortunately, Apple sometimes takes a different approach in this regard. For example, it decides by itself if you’ve been listening to music too loud over a long period of time and lowers the sound levels without seeking your consent. A new Headphone Safety sub-menu found under the WatchOS Settings is a case in point. Here’s how you can disable the feature.

A description under the Headphone Safety heading reads the feature enables the devices to protect your hearing. As such, it measures headphone audio levels automatically and if it finds the sound levels exceed the recommended 7-day limit, it sends a warning message. Read to find how to disable it!

  1. On your Watch, go to Settings.
  2. Select Sounds and Haptics.
  3. Choose Headphone Safety.
  4. Disable the feature.
  5. Disable Reduce Loud Sounds.
  6. Exit Settings.

If the audio exposure is loud enough for long enough, it can affect your hearing.

Unlock your Apple Watch by entering the passcode.

Head to the Settings.

Here, toggle the switch next to Headphone Notifications to off position.

Reduce Loud Sounds

Your Watch analyzes headphone audio and reduces any sound it finds over a set decibel level (over 80 decibels dB for 40 hours). To disable this setting, toggle the switch next to the Reduce Loud Sounds option to the Off position. It’s visible below the Headphone Notifications feature.

Why can’t I turn off Headphone Safety?

Apple says the feature cannot be switched off in certain regions as the company abides by local safety standards.

Hope that makes sense!
