With the US elections just a few months away, we could see political campaign ads running wild on social networking sites like Facebook and Instagram. People, however, like to see fewer political ads. So, as a part of its preparations for the upcoming 2020 US elections, the social networking giant is rolling out a feature that lets users limit political ads on Facebook.
Limit Political Ads on Facebook platform for upcoming 2020 US elections
The move will likely have a positive bearing on the platform’s commitments to election integrity. People will have a direct option to disable all social issue, electoral or political ads from
- Candidates in the fray
- Competing super PACs
- Rival organizations
And others that have the ‘Paid for by’ political disclaimer on them. To disable or limit the political Ads on Facebook,
- Access the Menu.
- Choose Settings & Privacy.
- Select Settings again.
- Go to Ads.
- Choose Ad Preferences.
- Click Hide Ad Topics.
- Select Social Issues, Election or Politics.
- Check See Fewer Ads About This Topics.
Facebook acknowledges the fact; this system isn’t perfect. So, if any user finds that even after configuring his/her preferences, the ads are still visible and ads they think are political, click the upper right corner of the ad and report it to Facebook.
Open your Facebook app and go to the Menu (visible as inverted triangle).
Choose ‘Settings’ from the list of options displayed and then, move to ‘Settings & Privacy’.
Next, select ‘Settings’ again and go to ‘Ads’.
Here, choose ‘Ad Preferences’.
Scroll down a bit to locate ‘Hide Ad Topics’ section.
When seen, select ‘Social Issues, Elections or Politics’ and enable ‘See Fewer Ads about these topics’ option.
When done, Facebook will limit the number of Political Ads seen on its platform. Facebook says this additional step is to make political advertising more transparent. Do you agree?? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below!
