How to change date and time on Mac computer

Like every computer, Mac also runs a ‘real-time clock’ that keeps track of the time & date entries. It drives power from a battery, so when you shut down the device, the clock continues to operate to keep accurate time. However, if you wish, you can change it. How to change date and time on Mac computer manually?

Your Mac uses its system clock to apply a date and time stamp to every file you create or edit, including the documents you save from your applications. To change date and time on your Macbook, follow the instructions given below!

  1. Open your Mac.
  2. Click the Apple icon.
  3. Go to System Preferences.
  4. Switch to the Date & Time tab.
  5. Enter the name and password, when prompted.
  6. Click Date & Time.
  7. Uncheck the Set date and time automatically option.
  8. Set the correct date.
  9. Save the changes.
  10. To change the time, deselect the Set time zone automatically using current location’ under Time Zone tab.
  11. Select a location (city closest to your location).
  12. Switch back to the Date and Time tab.
  13. Hit the drop-down button next to the clock to change time manually.
  14. Save your changes.

How to change time on Macbook Pro with date?

On your Mac, choose the ‘Apple’ menu, select ‘System Preferences’ from the list of options displayed and then, hit the ‘Date & Time’ tab.

Here, 2 options will be listed namely,

  • Automatically - For setting the date and time automatically, select ‘Set date and time automatically, then choose the network time server for your region.
  • Manually - For setting the date and time manually, uncheck the ‘Set date and time automatically’ option, click today’s date on the calendar, drag the clock’s hands to show the correct time (or enter the time), then click Save.
Deselect Automatic Option

Deselect ‘Set time zone automatically using current location’, choose a location on the map and click the Closest Town/City pop-up menu. At this step, you'll be prompted to click the ‘Lock’ icon to enter an administrator name and password. Do it!

Change the Date from the box provided. To change the Time manually, choose the Time Zone tab.

Uncheck the box, next to Set time zone automatically using current location.

Select the town or city closest to your location.

Switch back to the Date & Time tab. Hit the drop-down button next to clock to change the time.

When done, save the changes and close the window.

Be sure your time is correct so time stamps on emails, messages and files are correct.

Mac set date and time automatically greyed out

If you can't change date and time on Mac, click on the lock icon at the bottom of the date and time preferences setting window and enter any admin credentials to enable the setting. This will turn the option active.
