It’s a no-brainer! You see the red exclamation on Apple Watch when it experiences some problem and requires to be restored or updated. The troubleshooting steps involved are relatively simple and can be completed in just a few minutes. Let’s find out how it is done!

Generally, the screen of your watch will show an animation asking you to bring it close to an iPhone or display a red exclamation mark. In other cases, it could just freeze or stop working altogether. Here’s what you should do to fix the red exclamation on Apple Watch issue.

  1. Keep your iPhone is nearby
  2. Make sure the phone is unlocked.
  3. Turn on the Bluetooth connection.
  4. Put your Apple Watch on its charger.
  5. Double-click the side button on your Apple Watch.
  6. Follow the steps that appear on the iPhone.

The Apple Watch help screen with a red exclamation mark mainly appears on watches running watchOS 8.5 or later.

How do I get rid of the red exclamation point on my Apple Watch?

First of all, make sure that your iPhone is nearby and running iOS 15.4 or later. Also, confirm that its Bluetooth connection is enabled and connected to Wi-Fi.

Next, unlock it and put your Apple Watch on its charger.

Now, double-click the side button (the button below the circular Digital Crown) on your Apple Watch. See the screenshot above.

Then, follow the steps that appear on the iPhone. Your problem should be resolved.

Note – the same steps are applicable when your Apple Watch shows an animation asking you to bring it close to an iPhone.

Lastly, if the troubleshooting steps described above don’t work for you, check your Wi-Fi. Try using a 2.4GHz network instead of 5GHz, and make sure that you’re not on a captive or 802.1X network.
