Deeper penetration of the Internet and growing participation of the masses has enabled instant messaging services like WhatsApp to expand their reach even in the remotest corners of the world. Still, the threat around the data being accessed inappropriately or misused continue to exist. To address these and many other concerns, Facebook already offers end-to-end encryption for chats. A new change, now even lets you get that same level of encryption with your backups. Here’s how to activate WhatsApp end-to-end encrypted backup.
How to turn on or off WhatsApp end-to-end encrypted backup in iOS?
The record of your WhatsApp chats is stored as backups in iCloud or Google Drive. This statement can be mildly interpreted as Apple or Google has direct access to your chats. Thankfully, the new end-to-end encrypted backup feature rolled out by a Facebook-owned subsidiary will help you secure your WhatsApp cloud backups with a password.
- How to turn on end-to-end encrypted backup for WhatsApp
- Open Settings.
- Go to Chats.
- Select Chat Backup > End-to-end Encrypted Backup.
- Tap Turn On.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to create a password or key.
- Tap Create.
Note: You won’t be able to restore your backup if you lose your WhatsApp chats and forget your password or key. WhatsApp can’t reset your password or restore your backup for you.
Select the Settings icon displayed at the bottom of the app screen. Switch to the Chats heading.
When directed to a new screen, tap the Chat Backup option.
Scroll down to End-to-end Encrypted backup entry.
Tap on the turn-on link. When enabled, no one will be able to access your backup. Not even Apple or WhatsApp.
Create a password or use a 64-digit encryption key instead.
You can choose to include videos for backup. To avoid excessive data charges, connect your phone to Wi-Fi or disable Cellular data for iCloud.
Now, simply wait for WhatsApp to prepare your end-to-end encrypted backup. You might need to connect to a power source.
How do I turn off end-to-end encryption?
Open WhatsApp Settings. Tap Chats and go to Chat Backup entry again.
Move to End-to-end Encrypted Backup heading.
Tap Turn Off to disable end-to-end encryption. Enter your password to confirm.
Is end-to-end encrypted safe?
Yes! The method significantly reduces the number of entities that might have any indirect access to your data. Moreover, it ensures only you and the person you're communicating with can read or listen to what is sent, and nobody in between, not even WhatsApp.
Hope it makes sense!
