Are AirPods Pro Waterproof enough to avoid the risk of damage?

April 29, 2021 by Hemant Saxena

Although most of the time, the terms waterproof and water-resistant are used synonymously, there’s a subtle difference between them. Some people say Airpods are durably waterproof while others say it’s just water-resistant. So, there’s quite a mix-up on this subject and we thought of addressing it through this post. So, are AirPods Pro Waterproof? Let’s find out!

Are AirPods Pro waterproof?

Waterproof means the ability of an item to stay dry, however long and in whatsoever conditions. This is not the case with Apple’s wireless earphones. They can bear the burden of heavy perspiration or a splash but will fail to survive if placed under running water, such as a shower or a faucet. This means they are merely sweat- and water-resistant. So, their use around water, on rainy days, or even during water sports and exercise workouts like swimming puts them at risk of damage.

Moreover, sweat and water resistance aren’t permanent conditions. So, the built quality of the Bluetooth headphones might diminish over time. Apple Support page cautions, seals once diminished cannot be rechecked or resealed for sweat and water resistance. For seals to be waterproof, they have to be durable for washing, drying, and any kind of wear and tear. It’s just not possible for AirPods to guarantee this. Even the charging cases for all models of AirPods are not waterproof or water-resistant.

Can you wear AirPods pro in the shower?

For any damage by water or exposure to liquid, Apple does not replace AirPods. Users must order a new pair if they are impaired under such conditions. So, don’t ever wear AirPods pro in the shower, try to put them in the washing machine or dryer, and avoid wearing them in a sauna or steam room.

AirPods Pro waterproof rating

Apple wireless headphones are designed to help people stay on their phones nearly every waking hour. The 1st– and 2nd-generation AirPods were neither waterproof nor water-resistant. Things however changed with the entry of AirPods Pro. It supports both, sweat- and water-resistant capabilities with a water-resistance rating of IPX4. Ingress Protection (IP) rating of IPX4 indicates the object is resistant to water splashes from any direction.

Hope it makes sense!
